Ian Nyquist
Ian Nyquist is a multi-instrumentalist composer, field recordist, and sound designer based in Dublin. He’s provided original scores most recently for a short film directed by BAFTA award- winning director, Fergal Costello, as well as BBDO’s Galaxy chocolate Ad Campaign, and the Calor Gas ad campaign for TBWA to name a few.
Ian’s work is distinctly soundtrack-driven with roots firmly set in the world of soundtrack styled atmospherics. He explores classical composition with contemporary production which broadly ranges from sombre, melancholy, ethereal, and atmospheric, to uplifting, symphonic, and cinematic - all within a sound which is uniquely his own.
Ian has also released work on labels whose diverse rosters boast some of the most forward thinking modern composers working today.
Cuan, released both digitally and on CD through the French label Eilean Rec. in 2019, was described as “analogously immersive” by Dusted Magazine. Eilean Rec. declared the album as “a stunning album with a lot of influences and textures from electronic to dark ambient, post-classical and avant-garde”
His follow up album, Endless, Shapeless was released digitally and as a vinyl LP through the Laaps label at the start of 2021. The album has received accolades from various platforms including distinguished radio station, KEXP as well as Fluid radio who described the work as having “beautiful, flowing momentum” and who also note Ian’s ability to “effortlessly create an electronic, ambient, and post-classical landscape”.
Ian’s sound design abilities are notably informed by his practice of site-specific recording. His work has been both acknowledged and funded by the DLR Arts Council leading to his participation in an ongoing project featuring an online archive of field recordings, lost sounds, and sound histories called A Soundmap of Dun Laoghaire. Ian’s involvement as one of the project’s Guest Recordists provides a rich and diverse sonic environment contributing to the project’s unique listener experience.
